Toney is overlooked, but not undersized

Niceville (Fla.) pro-style quarterback Jeffrey Toney is a 6-foot-6, 212-pound quarterback that has a very strong arm, good pocket presence, and is mobile when he needs to be.

He's entering his second year as the starting quarterback of the Niceville Eagles, a top high school program in the sunshine state that makes deep runs into the playoffs year in and year out.

Toney is receiving interest from schools like Louisiana Lafayette, Troy, McNeese State, FIU, and USF. His lone offer comes from North Florida.

We beg the question - why aren't more schools looking at Toney? Quarterback recruiting is always a different beast than other positions, but Toney is a young man with no off the field issues and produces well on the field.

"Jeff is a drop back passer with very strong arm," Niceville offensive coordinator Tommy Joe Whiddon said. "He has enough strait line speed that he can make you pay with his legs if you do not respect them. He best attribute is he is extremely accurate on the deep ball and his decision making, only throwing 2 INTs last season. Jeff has the arm talent to play at the highest levels of football. Jeff will bring with him the base understanding of coverages and passing concepts run at the D1 level."

Mississippi State seemed to be impressed with Toney's performance at the Big Dawg Camp on July 22nd. Shortly after the camped ended, Toney received a text message from MSU defensive backs coach Terrell Buckley, who is also a Florida native.

"Coach Buckley texted me saying that I did great, and he liked what he saw," Toney said. "He said they already have a quarterback committed (Keytaon Thompson) but you never know in the future and keep up the good work."

Toney enjoyed his time working out with Bulldogs' quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson.

"Working with coach Johnson was a great experience, and he taught a lot of things that will make me a better quarterback this year and for the future," said Toney.

Overall, the Big Dawg Camp was a memorable experience for the rising senior gunslinger.

"I loved Mississippi State," Toney said. "Tt was great to be there. The facilities were amazing, and the stadium and atmosphere had me ready to play as soon as I saw it. It is the best school and atmosphere that I have visited."
